The U.S. Capitol Building was ordered into lockdown Friday morning, requiring staff and visitors to shelter in place, lock doors and stay away from windows due to police activity reported in the building, according to a memo distributed by police.
Authorities did not immediately comment on the specific reason. The order includes the Capitol Visitor Center where tourists enter the complex.
“If you are outside of an office building, seek cover away from the area,” the memo issued shortly after 9 a.m. said.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Capitol Police said in a brief statement that authorities locked down the buildings “out of abundance of caution” while they “investigate a report of a person of interest.”
No further comment was made.
It was not clear where in the complex the incident was located
